Nathaniel Prentice Banks
Cause of Death Age Burial Location Speaker Grave #
Unknown 78 Waltham, Massachusetts
11th in my collection

My first speaker of the House grave of 2016
was Nathaniel P. Banks, who served in that
capacity from February 1856 to March 1857.
Only four speakers have held the position
for a shorter amount of time.

For his years of public service,
Banks was commemorated with
a statue in Waltham Common,
located about a mile from his
grave in Grove Hill Cemetery.

In addition to his years in Congress, Banks
was the 24th governor of Massachusetts
and a Union general in the Civil War.

Banks' burial site was my final
grave of the day. Earlier my
friends and I visited the final
resting places of Hugh Duffy,
E. E. Cummings, William Lloyd
Garrison, and Dr. Joseph Warren.
